Berries such as strawberries and raspberries are considered to be aphrodisiacs because of their erotic shapes and intense colors. They are also packed with vitamins and nutrients, making them the healthiest fruits you can pick. They are rich in phytochemicals which can contribute in lowering the risk of cancer and heart disease. One of these types of phytochemicals is ellagic acid which is believed to block the development of cancer cells.

Berries have antioxidant capabilities. These are compounds that protect against free radicals and other destructive compounds in the body. Antioxidants rely on vitamin and mineral input from the diet to function. In berries, antioxidant properties come from what is known as anthocyanin. These compounds give cranberries, raspberries, boysenberries and other berries their deep rich color. Anthocyanins have also been found to control diabetes, improve circulation andvision, and slow down the effects of aging.

Cranberries and blueberries, in particular, can help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. They are also good in treating urinary-tract infections. Other health benefits of these berries include protection against strokes.

All berries are rich in fiber. Dietary fiber supplies bulk to feces which makes elimination of waste much easier. A diet high in fiber can reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood and reduce the risk of developing obesity. It can also prevent cancer in the large intestine (aka colon cancer). Remember that one cup of blackberries has three times the amount of fiber found in one slice of whole wheat bread!
